Abstract
This study demonstrates the effectiveness of Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) on social anxiety. based on ACT principles, acceptance, mindfulness, self-compassion, and maladaptive self-focused attention were proposed as process variables in the treatment of social anxiety. Changes in the process variables were measured throughout the study and analyzed to discover what process variables mediated a reduction of social anxiety. Participants consisted of 22 adults from the general public who scored higher than 93 points on the Social Anxiety and Distress Scale (SADS). Data was collected from 11 subjects in the ACT-treatment group and 11 in the control group over the course of 8 therapy sessions. Through repeated ANOVA tests, results showed a significant reduction of social anxiety symptoms in the experimental group and participants showed greater improvement in the process variables of acceptance, mindfulness, and self-kindness (a sub-scale of self-compassion) compared to the control group. The relief of social anxiety symptoms and process variable improvement continued 4 weeks after finishing therapy. Repeated ANOVA analysis at post-test revealed the process variable of self-compassion to also have increased significantly in the ACT-treatment group. Examination of repeated mediation effects in the experimental group showed the variables of self-compassion/self-kindness to especially influence changes in social anxiety and avoidance behavior. The effectiveness of ACT and the mechanisms behind its use in the treatment of social anxiety is demonstrated, and the significance and limitations of this research, as well as implications for future research, is discussed.
